Cedar Rapids man among last family members jailed for gun smuggling
Bassem Herz, 31, of Cedar Rapids, the final family member convicted in smuggling 252 firearms to Lebanon, received eight years in federal prison after three continued hearings. He pleaded guilty to firearms conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and Arms Export Control Act violations, and must forfeit 48 575 dollars. Other family members received 27, 20, and seven year sentences. The case stemmed from shipments hidden in skid loaders bound for Lebanon in 2014 and 2015, with motives cited as greed and profits three to ten times their value. Judge Linda Reade noted aggravating factors from Herz’s false testimony during prior hearings.
