In Cedar Rapids captain Chris Hayman runs a near one million dollar annual budget delivering counseling social services and meals while managing holiday toy donations. Volunteers sort toys at a donated warehouse to help families in need during Christmas season.
Chris Hayman 39 a corps officer with the Salvation Army works with Cedar Rapids volunteers and donors at the Corps Center pantry on 1000 C Ave NW. He notes the city is hungry despite abundant help as the pantry distributes about seven tons of food every two weeks.
The Salvation Army in Cedar Rapids names a new social services director as the local board orders a study of the center’s needs. Hayman aims to have a plan within a year to increase family self sufficiency while fearing space limits. He notes a 35 year old center with a small staff and many volunteers. Bob Taylor, 83, preserves a century of computing history in his Solon home office. The exhibit traces his grandfather R D Taylor, his father Harmon Taylor, and his own work with insurance actuarial values and early machines from a 1960s transistor to a 1985 Data General laptop.
Marine reservist Mark Meyer settled a civil suit against Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa after he was fired two days after informing supervisors of an Iraq deployment. The August settlement remains confidential. Meyer returned from Iraq and plans further studies at Hawkeye Community College and UNI.
Mark Meyer a U S Marine Corps Reserve corporal filed a discrimination and wrongful termination suit in December 2004 against Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa. He contends he was dismissed shortly after informing his manager that his reserves unit would be activated and deployed to Iraq.
