The Democratic Party commission voted to keep Iowa as the first to open the 2008 presidential nominating process, with New Hampshire retaining the first primary on January 29. The panel proposed adding an additional caucus to broaden participation beyond Iowa and New Hampshire.
Iowa delegates hailed a proposal approved by voice vote to add one or two caucuses after Iowa and before New Hampshire and to insert primaries in one or two states after New Hampshire. The plan asks the Democratic National Committee to set dates with no contest before January 14 and aims to have Iowa go first and alone in 2008, with coordination for a simultaneous GOP date.
Iowa legislative leaders say sex offender living restrictions and monitoring rules will be refined in the 2006 session after lawmakers obtain clearer data on which offenders pose the greatest risk. House Speaker Christopher Rants emphasized first classifying offenders to guide policy decisions and determine appropriate restrictions.
At Harding Middle School in Cedar Rapids the main office and its connected auxiliary offices form a busy hub. Students come here to obtain attendance slips amid ringing phones visitors and constant paperwork while staff field questions and manage daily flow.
Harding, Cedar Rapids largest middle school with about 60 rooms and 915 students, plans to enroll 935 in September. Principal Randy Krejci, Associate Principal Randy Noecker lead 61 teachers, 18 associates, 14 food workers, 10 counselors, 6 secretaries, 6 custodians, 2 admins, and 1 facilitator in a busy school focused on communication and planning. Secretary Ricky Machula and Sue Pitcher greet visitors, seen as the mothers of hundreds of students.
