Dozen 38 Documents Published In U S Spy Scandals

Dozens of confidential state department papers seized in the 1930s by a confessed Communist agent were released by the House Committee on Un-American Activities with state department approval. Twelve of the papers, some on microfilm, were among material found by Whittaker Chambers. The documents reveal Hitler’s looming war plans and Japan’s belligerence, and include messages by William C. Bullitt and Joseph C. Grew. The fate of the rest remains uncertain.

Hospital Group Backs Health Insurance Plan

The American Hospital Association voiced support for a nationwide voluntary health insurance program to be offered by the Blue Cross Commission. Richard LaMere 22 of Racine and Evelyn Ritter wed Saturday then rode a motorcycle with a sidecar for a troupe that drew a crowd downtown Cedar Rapids. The group including William Ritter and Dietrich Becker staged a drunken rodeo. Becker faced reckless driving charges while the others were booked for drunkenness. By 10 pm they were released after posting bonds.

Two Tots Escape Death as Fire Destroys House

In Delaware county near Greeley two young children ages 3 and 2 were left alone in a tenant house when fire gutted the building Saturday afternoon. They were unconscious from smoke and gas and revived at Edgewood by Dr. T W Lichter. The family including a three month old baby faced loss of all belongings and Red Cross officials appealed for clothing and aid.

Communist Forces Pierce Hwai River Defenses

Report from Nanking states two Communist columns possibly 30,000 men crossed the Hwai river defenses and threaten the rail line 71 miles northwest of Nanking. Advisories say Mingkuang station has received government reinforcements. The crossing occurred about 40 miles east of Pengpu and 90 miles west of Nanking with penetration of the line except for the Yangtze river.

Procter and Gamble announced a two cent per pound reduction in wholesale Crisco vegetable shortening in Cincinnati. Officials cited changes in the raw materials market as the reason for the price cut.
