Land Retirement Program Behind Schedule in 1934
The New Deal farm acreage retirement program is about 10 million acres behind schedule as 1934 closes. Secretary Wallace expected 43 million acres retired. 38 million removed from production, but sub-marginal land retirement lagged. The plan targets large areas, including mountainous Colorado, northern New York, Mississippi, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, with potential forest use and expanded drought considerations.
