The Daily Record lists births from Mercy on December 10 and St Luke's on December 10 and 11. Names include J James Jung and Ron Lane, with several newborns and parental addresses in Cedar Rapids and nearby towns. A white male, about 5 10 and 20 to 25, robbed Hawkeye State motor bank in southwest Iowa City around 1 15 PM using a small caliber pistol. He directed a woman teller to empty her drawer, fled on foot, no violence reported, and no leads as FBI Cedar Rapids notes. An unrelated search at Victor Metal Products followed the incident.

The senate judiciary committee unanimously approved President Ford's nomination of Judge John Paul Stevens of Chicago to the supreme court. Chairman James Eastland said he would report the nomination favorably to the senate and bring it up Monday for a vote to allow action before adjournment and have Stevens seated for the court's new January session, filling the vacancy from Justice William O. Douglas's retirement.
A 16-year-old boy was charged with assault with intent to commit rape and assault in two incidents involving young girls. He allegedly tried to rape a six-year-old girl on Tuesday and assaulted a nine-year-old girl with a knife at an elementary school on Wednesday morning. He was released to probation authorities pending court action.

Des Moines reports Bob Joslin of Clarence won the Iowa Farm Bureau vice presidency in a five-candidate race as Dean Klechner moved to the president's slot. Joslin, a 52 year old farmer, runs an 800 acre operation and markets 2,500 hogs yearly. Delegates also addressed policy changes on property tax reliance, land use, grain standards, and estate tax exemptions.
Rodney Wellington, ex-Iowa football player, was found innocent in Johnson County District Court of delivering LSD mushrooms. The seven hour deliberation left the defendant tearful, with the defense arguing the mushrooms were kept for safety by others and planted responsibility on Wellington due to coercion from the state's main witness. The prosecutor maintained Wellington knowingly sold the mushrooms to an undercover agent.
Edward Wedelstedt, accused of ordering the October 4 1974 Salty Dog tavern fire, took the stand in his own defense on Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday. The prosecution finished its case, with defense expected to close on Thursday and final arguments possibly late Thursday or early Friday, said County Attorney Eugene Kopecky.
