Council members hope to form a fund to assist eligible students unable to afford travel. Mary Elizabeth Connell serves as council president.
Numerous East Iowa communities announce seasonal happenings from parties and home decor contests with $50 in prizes to lighting displays, choral performances of Handel's Messiah, free children’s matinees, and Santa visits. Highlights include Clarence Legion hall party, Atkins memorial union party, Quasqueton Murray Lecture proceeds, Kalona vespers, and McGregor lighting contests.
Iowa county officials used Amana Society head counts to tally 1,678 residents in seven villages for the road use tax distribution. The count rises 102 from 1950 and relies on Peter Stuck’s books on water rent. Other notes include Mississippi tow boat tallies by Gordon Lord and a Santa Claus mishap involving Arvin Sprague in Iowa City.
Iowa City City high school student council will host a Christmas walk December 18 from 2 to 6 pm. Seven local homes including those of University of Iowa President Virgil Han cher and others will open as hosts for 15 council members and hostess Sylvia Allegre, aiding the American Field Service student program with funds for immediate use.
Barbara Ward also known as Lady Jackson will deliver the John F Murray Memorial lecture at the University of Iowa on April 6. The British writer and journalist has authored seven books since 1938 and is recognized for expertise in international affairs. She joined the London Economist in 1939 and became assistant editor in 1940.

AMES The fifth annual Christmas Festival of Music by the Iowa State University department of music features two performances at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the ISU armory with no admission. More than 1,000 students from East Iowa are listed, including participants from Blairstown, Brooklyn, Cedar Rapids, Decorah, Dysart, Iowa City, Marion, Manchester, Marengo, Newhall, North English, Tipton, Vinton, Waukon, and other towns. The Farmers Market section promotes livestock and farm produce advertising in The Gazette.
