French monk sparked oldest champagne house origin
Reims based Ruinart Pere et Fils is named by Guinness as the oldest champagne firm. The champagne method arose over 250 years ago in Hautvillers Abbey in the Diocese of Reims when monk Dom Perignon shared his secret with Dom Ruinart. Ruinart passed the knowledge to his nephew, Nicholas Ruinart, who founded the firm in 1729.
