German Raids Enliven West Front Picture
German troops conducted 60 raids along a 100 mile stretch of the western front between the Moselle and Rhine early Thursday. French outposts were attacked with rifles, machine guns, grenades and mortars as artillery restored front lines. Heavy losses were reported for the raiders, and a German battalion of about 1,200 men attacked near Wissembourg before being driven back by French artillery. Two famed cyclists met in no man’s land as Robert Oubron wounded a German, captured their prisoners, and exchanged names with Kurt Stoepel.
