Viet Cong and North Vietnamese gunners blasted more than 50 rockets into Tan Son Nhut air base and nearby areas in the heaviest attack on Saigon since the Tet offensive. Ground fighting near the city center followed, with about 1,500 government troops involved and nine killed in the rocket strike on the base.
Cedar Rapids adopts an airport user fee ordinance setting a $1 charge for all enplaning passengers effective January 1. The fee will be collected by the airport authority and enforced by the city police. Mayor Donald Canney notes 18 other U S cities have similar fees ranging from 50 cents to $3.
The United States accepts most Cuban hijack handling terms including ships and aircraft and adds a clause for extradition as an alternative to prosecution. The plan, routed via Silvio Masnata, aims to reduce hijack harassment and includes new security measures at airports within 60 days.
President Nixon announced Earl Butz would remain as secretary of agriculture while Peter Peterson leaves the commerce post. Frederick Dent will replace Peterson as commerce secretary and Peterson will undertake a temporary mission to discuss economic matters with U.S. trading partners. Dent, 50, head of Mayfair Mills, is a Yale graduate and textile leader.
Former President Harry S Truman, 88, was reported in serious condition in Kansas City. Doctors confirmed bronchitis complicated by arterial sclerosis and mild heart weakening, with acute illness and recovery uncertain as inhalation therapy and antibiotics are given.
Fred Kopmann trudged 40 miles through 18 inch deep snow in subzero temperatures to reach help for his sons Rolf 11 Michael 9 and Frank 6 after their jeep stalled in a Rocky Mountain pass. He reached a power plant after 15 hours and contacted RCMP. A helicopter failed to land due to fog. rescuers reached the boys 31 hours after the ordeal began.
Rita Duncan 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Duncan, was struck by a car while helping a younger child cross near a school bus on Highway 70 south of West Liberty. She was a West Liberty middle school seventh grader and cheerleader. Survivors include her parents, a brother Brett, two sisters Marla and Sheryl, and grandparents. Funeral services set for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at West Liberty United Methodist Church.
