Dorothy M. Culp 45 of 1238 Fourth avenue SE was found dead in her Vinton apartment Saturday. She worked at Armstrong's. born Oct 23 1926 in Vinton. Survived by mother Leona Kohl of Vinton brothers Delbert Robert Kerkman and S Sgt Darrell Kerkman in Vietnam sister Dalores Casteel of Lompoc Calif. Services Wednesday 2 p.m. Campbell funeral home Vinton. Casket will not be opened.
J. Whalen 58 former Cedar Rapids resident died Sunday in Tulsa after a brief illness. Born in Tipton he lived in Cedar Rapids until 1951 when he moved to Tulsa. Services will be held Tuesday at St. Jude's in Tulsa at 10 a.m. There are no immediate local survivors.
Sheriff's deputies investigated an explosion at a Covington residence around 10 30 a m Monday. Initial reports said no one was home and no injuries occurred, with extensive damage to the house. A gas water heater in the basement is said to have ruptured through the floor into a closet. Palo fire department responded, though no fire was observed.

Nancy Petersen, a minor from Cedar Rapids, sues J C Penney Co for 15294 alleging unjust firing for theft accusations in the Cedar Rapids downtown store. Through her father Robert Petersen the suit seeks 294 in lost wages plus 15000 punitive damages and 15294 for slander. The petition claims managers fired her June 25 and harmed her employment prospects until July 28.
Glenn Pierce, 37, of 2920 First avenue NE, was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary at Ft. Madison for lascivious acts with a child. Judge Ansel Chapman imposed the term in Linn district court Monday. A one year county jail option was possible. The conviction followed a July 31 incident involving an 11-year-old Cedar Rapids girl.
Thomas P. Creen, 18, of Mansfield avenue SE, charged with breaking into Larry Brown's home on Robins road in Hiawatha. Justice of the Peace Steve West said Brown filed the burglary count. Creen surrendered at the county jail and was released Sunday on West's orders.
Thomas Burke, 73, a former Democratic U.S. senator and Cleveland mayor, has died in Cleveland Ohio. Burke served as mayor before entering the Senate and was a prominent regional political figure. The death was reported by Associated Press.
