Detroit Lions Clinch Tie For Third Straight NFL Title

Detroit and Cleveland headed toward a third straight NFL championship clash after Cleveland clinched at least a share of the Eastern title as Detroit tied the Eagles 13 13 for a Western crown. The death of Redskins guard Dave Sparks in a weekend game cast a pall over the league’s 1954 campaign. Sparks died of a heart attack two hours after a 34 14 loss to Cleveland. He had hip trouble earlier but returned to play and felt fine in the dressing room. Sparks was the second NFL player to die in season history, after Cardinals tackle Stan Mauldin in 1948. Detroit’s rally produced a 13 13 tie with Philadelphia with Lew Carpenter and Doak Walker accounting for the go ahead points. The Giants still had a mathematical chance, needing a Pittsburgh loss and a Detroit or Cleveland loss to tie for the title. The schedule showed Detroit at Cleveland on December 19 and a potential championship game at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium on December 26.
