Appeals court finds Cedar Rapids open meetings law violation
The Iowa Court of Appeals ruled Cedar Rapids City Council violated open meetings law by privately interviewing for the city clerk job in 2021. The decision reverses a district court ruling, cites lack of documented need for a closed session, and keeps potential fines under $2,500 while requiring release of the interview recording.

Farm income forecast shows 2024 drop from 2023
The December USDA ERS forecast projects 2024 net cash farm income at 158.8 billion, down 3.5 percent in real terms from 2023, driven by lower crop receipts despite higher animal product receipts. Median on farm income rises to 100,634 dollars, and off farm income grows as residential farms remain common. The forecast will update February 6 with 2025 projections.
