Bach Cantatas Volume 30 on Telefunken gains four works
Volume 30 of the Bach cantatas series presents Cantatas 120 through 123 in a two record boxed set on Telefunken 6.35578. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts with period instruments and clear German English and French texts. The set includes a miniature score, program notes, and commentary for serious listeners. Cantata 120 features a stately opening alto aria and a brilliant brass driven chorus, with strong choral singing throughout. Cantata 121 opens with a stilted chorale then drives into a powerful tenor aria and a bass aria noted for its walking bass. Cantata 122, a Christmas postscript, starts somber in C minor but culminates in a joyful soprano recitative and alto-soprano duet before a brief closing chorale. Cantata 123 opens with a chorus and highlights a tenor aria in F sharp minor ending with a quiet closing chorale. The recording emphasizes authentic instrumentation and clear German texts, with favorable commentary on the choral performances.
