A U.S. Geological Survey five year report shows national water use at 420 billion gallons daily, averaging 1 600 gallons per person. Iowa per person use rose from 750 gallons in 1970 to about 1 200 gallons in 1975, while state total rose from 2.1 to 3.5 billion gallons daily.

Policeman among six Iowa fatalities over the weekend
Prairie City police officer Ron ald Hewitt 25 and passenger Dennis McCuen Jr. 20 of Prairie City died when Hewitt’s squad car was struck during a suspected stop on Highway 163 near Prairie City. Wanda Jean Smith 18 of Knoxville and other motorists died in separate crashes, including Darrell Cooley 35 of Des Moines and an infant in a Packwood crash.

Alaskans halt search for missing Iowa pilot
The search for 21 year old Russell Santema of Rock Valley Iowa and a female companion missing since November 22 after a small twin engine plane supposedly crashed en route from Point Hope to Kotzebue has been called off. Elmendorf officials reported 100 light plane flights and 400 hours of searching before the halt. Santema was a pilot for an Anchorage company.
