Maurice Pentecost was elected mayor of Independence on nov. 8 and his brother Maury won a Runoff election for Jesup s mayoral position on nov. 29. Both Defeated incumbent mayors in their respective towns. Since the election Maurice has jokingly asked others Quot what if our Mother knew she had two political giants in the family a the twins were orphaned when they were toddlers along with six Brothers and Sisters. Maury and Maurice lived in a City orphanage in Beaumont Texas until they were la. The knights of pythias a social and fraternal order sponsored the boys to live at the orders Home in Weatherford. Texas. The order founded in 1864, maintains Homes for children along with other benevolent activities. Went different ways the Brothers lived in the Home during their formative years. Both have warm memories of one of their teachers a miss Gracy. And you can quite often hear them laugh As they compare pranks they played on different ones. Work was also part of their duties each Day at the Home. It might be cleaning the dormitories or caring for the livestock. Their lives went in different directions As the two Brothers grew into manhood. Maurice went into the Navy while Maury went on to Junior College and then to North Texas state in Denton Texas. By this time Maury was on his own working part time while he was attending classes. During his senior year he took a full time Job so he quit school. The two had kept in touch so when Maurice was discharged they decided to team up and took jobs making River weights for a pipeline. They worked in several states and in 1961 they came to Independence. Here they met their future wives Joan Mcnamara and Anna Mae Gates. Both to Waterloo once again they separated. Maury went to work at John Deere a in Waterloo. He had always wanted to finished his last year of College so in 1970 Deere a granted him an educational leave of absence and he took his family Back to Texas. He earned a degree in education Only to come Back to a Lay off at Deere a. When he i towns Nally returned to work at the company the Union appointed him a Steward and was later elected committeeman. While Maury was at Deere a Maurice was also working in Waterloo at Titus manufacturing. He worked there for 11 years before joining his twin at the Deere Plant. The Brothers came to their elected positions with different political backgrounds. Quot i am not a politician but i will take the problems As they come a says Maury the Jesup mayor. Maurice whose hobbies have always been government and history served on the City Council for four years. He says he is a staunch conservative. He wants to set up a budget that Independence can stay within. The twins share the same goal however. Both want to be effective mayors.
