Steam line blast near Cedar Rapids plant prompts investigation
A third party will probe the cause of a steam line explosion near the Cargill plant in northeast Cedar Rapids. No injuries were reported as Alliant Energy crews shut down 10 and 200 pound lines and rerouted service to other facilities. The blast damaged a vault, opened a large hole, and several vehicles were damaged. Cargill and Quaker plants, U S Cellular Center and Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel retain steam from an alternate system while a new boiler is installed. Minor details about the incident remain under study with results not expected until next week.

Cedar Valley Humane Society worker denied unemployment benefits
State administrative law judge ruled against Anne Gentner and other former workers, upholding the Cedar Valley Humane Society board. The dismissal stemmed from alleged violations of confidentiality and media contact policies after a September layoff amid internal dispute. Gentner’s claim for benefits was denied citing willful breach and damage to the shelter’s image.
