Southwest Iowa City by Pass Sought In Five-Year Plan

City manager says District Engineer Van Synder secured agreement from the state highway commission to pursue a southwest Iowa City by pass in the next five year program. The exact route will be set after a formal project hearing in Iowa City. The council also approved an option to buy a 45 acre tract for a sanitary landfill south of the city and moved to rezone land behind Protein Blenders plant. A house moving ordinance amendment passed to require advance council notification of appeals. The council enforced zoning against a trailer on South Dubuque street and referred a race related relocation issue to the human relations commission. Mayor Doderer urged council and residents to assist a man unable to find housing. Des Moines reports Jack J. Buehner of Mason City named president of the Master Builders of Iowa.

Irvin Wildman, a Des Moines driver education teacher, told the Iowa conservation commission the camper fee rise from 1.00 to 1.50 per day is unfair. He argued campers subsidize park operations with others sharing the burden, while the commission cites added facilities like toilets and showers as the need. The chairman urged legislative change if desired, and Wildman plans more pleas with the group and Gov Hughes.
