Paris trip shaped Wood and Cone early works on view
Cedar Rapids Museum of Art marks the centennial of Grant Wood and Marvin Cone’s 1920 Paris stay with about 30 pieces. The two artists painted in Luxembourg Gardens and lesser sights, using a quick brushy style and small formats. They traveled on a shoestring, staying in hostels and monks’ quarters, and documented their journey in Cone’s diary. The show highlights early impressions that contrast with their later mature, more defined landscapes.
