In Linn County District Court Edward Cusic, on trial for first degree murder in Anita Labkon’s death, gave conflicting accounts of the night of Dec 7 2012. He told police a crowbar defense after his mother attacked him with a dagger, and later said a gun was involved in a jailhouse interview.

Five Thousand Pigs Die in Wellman Nursery Fire
Wellman Fire Chief Jeremy Peck reported a total loss of about 5,000 25 pound pigs in a Tuesday night blaze at a nursery facility 3.5 miles south of Wellman. Keota and Kalona departments assisted as water and gas lines were shut off. No injuries to people or firefighters occurred. The cause remains undetermined pending investigation.

Cedar Rapids man accused of smuggling drugs in body
Brandon Wilson, 26, of Cedar Rapids, is charged after authorities found 51 bags of crack cocaine and marijuana in his rectum during a Linn County jail booking. He had over $1,700 in cash. Earlier this year he faced similar charges and a plea hearing is set for December.

The City Council approved a 272150 contract with a South Dakota firm to install an LED ribbon message board at Veterans Memorial Stadium in C. R. The display will be 8 feet tall and 85 feet long behind the right-field wall and will show advertising and player statistics. Daktronics of Brookings, S C, holds the contract for both the scoreboard and the ribbon board.
