High Court expands union rights in labor secretaries ruling

The Supreme Court with a 5-4 vote restored full labor law protection to most front office workers with access to confidential records, excluding only those handling direct labor relations. The decision orders Mary Weatherman reinstated with back pay at Hendricks County Rural Electric in Danville Indiana. It also returns to the 7th Circuit the Beaver Dam case involving 18 workers seeking union representation. In a separate ruling, inmates under Youth Corrections Act may lose special privileges if later sentenced for prison crimes.

Begin coalition wins round on U.S.-Israel pact

In Jerusalem the Begin government survived four no confidence motions over the U S Israel strategic alliance by a 57 53 vote in the Knesset with two abstentions and eight absent. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon defended the pact amid claims of secret provisions while the United States denied such charges. Begin, nursing a broken hip, and Labor’s Haim Bar-Lev, with a broken leg, stayed away on paired votes.
