Parks director Charles A. Kremenak reports two rolls of snow fence and lumber stolen from Willow park storage over the past two weeks. Value of fence about $30. He vows to change the storage area after noting ongoing missing lumber and suspects someone intends to keep snow off their yard.
The city building department issued three new house permits to Linn-Mar Construction Co. for 2940 Twenty-fifth Avenue at 21,263 dollars, Ed Meader for 2990 Twenty-fifth Avenue at 16,394 dollars, and Meader for 2960 Twenty-fifth Avenue at 16,900 dollars. Rathje Construction Co. received a permit for a pole and metal warehouse at 4925 Forty-ninth Street, estimated at 6,000 dollars. A 12,000 dollar addition is planned for the Apco service station at 2525 Seventh Avenue, with Read Construction Co. the contractor. Shell Oil Co. obtained a permit to install a fiberglass gasoline storage tank at 2180 Seventh Avenue, estimated at 7,000 dollars. El View Construction Co. is the contractor. Other permits include Roy L. Johnson remodeling at 1080 Blairs Ferry Road for 250 dollars and William Kell remodeling at 480 Grand Avenue for 400 dollars.
In the police court of Judge Miles Adams, multiple Cedar Rapids residents faced charges for speeding and traffic offenses including speeding for James M. Birmingham, Robert G. Ehlinger, Michael W. McCusker and others with fines from $2 to $49. Cases in the justice of the peace court presided by Jessie L. McCormack included speeding by James A. Smith and John T. Sires, and overweight on axle and registration by Cecil M. Blankenship with total fines reaching $117.75.
Coralville resident Thomas Graham, 18, was charged with breaking and entering after a 10:57 p.m. call reported a breakin at Vonnie's beauty shop in Iowa City. Police found an alley door broken. Graham tried to flee and was subdued. About $50 in cash and change was found on him.
In Johnstown Pennsylvania a contractor sought road closure on Market Street to demolish buildings for urban renewal. Officials clashed as Highway Director Arcurio ordered closures, Mayor Tompkins kept it open, and Safety Director McKee deployed a fire engine to block the street. The engine was towed away, and a second tow truck arrived, but the engine left before it did. The dispute remained unresolved with residents betting on the mayor.
