Des Moines Democrat Senator Andrew Frommelt, a Dubuque real estate man and majority floor leader nominee, says reapportionment will dominate the upcoming General Assembly and may hinge on sub districting. He notes bipartisan pressure, tax question uncertainties, and a commitment to a responsible majority.
A burglar entered Riha's store in Vining and Avery's grocery in Montour, taking cash and merchandise amounting to substantial sums. Riha's yielded $15 in coins, stamps, cigarets, gum, pens, knives, tobacco, beer, candy, and gloves. Avery's netted $60 and assorted items including cigarets, toothpaste, shampoo, Band Aids, coffee, juice, and cigars. Sheriff Quigley suspects the same burglar carried out both jobs, with fresh snow and footprints noted at Riha's.
Everett Bearbower, legal adult, bought beer for two teens at a Chelsea tavern. He faced charges in Tama, found guilty of furnishing beer to minors, fined 100 dollars plus costs, and sentenced to 30 days in Tama county jail for a second offense. Information filed by Sheriff Milo Quigley.
Dr. Kenneth G. McCracken, head of cosmic ray research at the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in Dallas, will visit the Cornell college campus on December 9 and 10 for meetings and informal discussions with students and faculty.
Alexander Walker of Tama settlement pled guilty to drunk driving in Indian Village township on November 22. He was fined 300 dollars plus costs or 60 days in county jail at hard labor. His license was revoked for 60 days.
TOLEDO The estate at Montour of John H. Thurston is valued at 25520.67. It consists mostly of real estate in Indian Village township and 17 acres with buildings in Marshall county. Heirs are widow Goldie A. Thurston and four daughters Vera Bovee Eleanor Reisinger Elsie Campbell and Erma Schnathorst. The late Jesse R. Joy who died in India last April 30 1964 at age 59 is valued at 32910.19 consisting of real estate near the Tama Indian settlement and stocks and bonds. Heirs are three sons Jesse Roland Joy Eldon Joy Mackinley Shell and two daughters Sharon Bear and Cheryl Joy. The late Ruben Arp of Gladbrook left a will dated Dec. 20 1962. He leaves his estate to wife Minnie M. Arp except stock and holdings in Arp Truck Lines Inc to be sold for cash. Son David L. Arp has first option to buy the stock over 90 days. Settlement may be by cash or promissory note payable to Minnie or, if she does not survive, in equal shares to surviving children Paul and David L. Arp and Delores Matney. If wife does not survive, estate goes to the children in equal shares. Thomas Davidson who died Feb. 8 at Colorado Springs age 92 left Tama county estate valued at 28601.66 mostly in real estate. Heirs are daughter Marian C. Hagerman and two sons James A. Davidson and Gordon W. Davidson.
Bishop Reuben H. Mueller of the Evangelical United Brethren Church condemned critics of the National Council of Churches for spreading malicious falsehoods about its social action. He warned against religious racism and said the council remains a key voice in Christian social responsibility, rejecting Communist accusations. The remarks came at the council’s General Board meeting in Des Moines as reports on religion and race and Vietnam and Congo mission work were reviewed.
DES MOINES AP The state banking department announced that the First State bank of Manchester has raised its capital stock from 50000 to 75000.
Dr. Robert Moore, 76, a Dunlap veterinarian and former state legislator, was nominated by Democratic leaders to serve as secretary of the Iowa senate as the 61st general assembly meets in January. Moore would succeed Republican Carroll Lane and his selection appears virtually assured.
Fulton announced Edna Gillespie of Des Moines a Republican will be retained as journal clerk of the senate. He will preside in the senate as lieutenant governor.
Grinnell Iowa audience hears Rep. Fred Schwengel urge Republicans to join a serious moderation program. He argues moderates failed to organize for the 1960 Republican convention and must regain the party’s broad appeal after his election loss.
The Volga event will host Santa at 2 p.m. on December 24. Children will receive treats during the visit.
