Iowa prison population set to rise over next decade
A state report by the Iowa Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning projects the nine state prisons housing about 8 200 inmates will grow to more than 9 200 within ten years. The rise stems from longer mandatory terms for sex and violent offenders, with 427 more sex offenders behind bars by 2023 and a 50 percent rise in inmates over age 50. The study notes ongoing racial disparities with blacks making up about 26 percent of inmates though only 3.1 percent of residents, and that by 2023 about a quarter of black inmates will be in mandatory sentences with 70 percent term served before parole.
