Hawkeye Athletics Struggles to Repay $50 Million Loan

Hawkeye Athletics has repaid little of the 2021 $50 million loan from the main UI campus. As of 2024, $47.6 million remains outstanding despite $3 million repaid in 2022 and $3 million across 2023 and 2024, with interest consuming most payments and only about $300,000 applied to principal. The department, self described as self sustaining, faced deficits and cut three men’s sports in 2021 amid pandemic losses.
