Kalona Poultry Farm Embraces Computer Monitoring
Duane Yoder and son Jerry on the D.E. and E.L. Poultry farm in Kalona Iowa unveiled a computer monitored feed and water system. The teletype based monitor tracks consumption costs and inventory for a 50 000 head flock, flags leaks, and provides quick profit calculations as the first eastern Iowa adopters. The system, developed by Mark Launder, marks a shift from early teletype setups to mini computers enabling real time management.

Large Savings from Computer Tool in Poultry Ops
Launder touts computers as a powerful management tool for poultry farms saving dollars by reducing feed waste. He cites a operator saving $15,000 monthly in feed losses by spotting over consumption and alarms saving two flocks of 100,000 birds. The system enables rapid ration adjustments to prevent waste and potential catastrophes. A waterline leak affects Yoders barn three.

Yoder poultry farm links cage housing to feed savings
The Yoder family shifted from floor to cage housing, cutting feed per bird from 18–20 pounds to under 13. They now raise 47,000 layers in two houses and 25,000 pullets in a growing house with plans for a third laying house soon. Delmar Gunden of Bay Port Mich suggests a similar computer setup could cost 22 000 to 25 000. Launder notes potential hog operation use for the system and demonstrates a portable computer bank that can connect via telephone to monitor farm problems from away.
