Transplanting Peonies and Daylilies in Iowa Gardens

Iowa gardeners show more interest in peonies and daylilies. Extension horticulturist A E Cott of Iowa State advises transplanting in late August or early September to establish before freezing. Peonies need 3 to 5 eyes, full sun, and shallow planting with top eye one inch below soil. Daylilies bloom best in full sun though some shade works if competition is mild. Divide plants into 3-5 or 3-4 strong offshoots, trim tops to eight to ten inches, and water weekly after planting.
