Crash at Rail Crossing Kills Delhi Girl 18
An 18 year old Delhi girl, Ellene Lois Reth, died from severe head injuries when a car collided with a northbound freight engine on Blairs Ferry road near Hiawatha at 2:05 am. Her companion, 23 year old Richard A Read, was in fair condition with head, facial, chest injuries. Read was driving east. the train engine was headed north. Read and Reth were ejected as the car traveled 252 feet from the crash site. Read, from Waterloo, was taken to St Luke's hospital. Rail crew M M Perry and C R Owen, both of Waterloo, operated the locomotive. Reth had been employed by Collins Radio and planned to enter Coe College that fall.

Kenneth John Bunge 27 of Mechanicsville drowned about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Cedar River at Palisades Kepler state park while fishing with companions. His body was recovered ten minutes after the accident by Wesley Dvorak of Cedar Rapids. Bunge, to wed Edith Ford of Mt. Vernon, had bought a house in Mechanicsville. He leaves parents, eight siblings, and worked as a painter for Cook Paints. The body was taken to Horner funeral home in Mechanicsville.
