The Daily Record reports forecast for Sancey area with fair hot humid conditions and highs near 99, lows 68 to 74. It notes a gasoline overflow incident at Fourth Avenue and Third Street, followed by multiple city and county obituary and service notices, births, divorces, traffic fines, and fire department alert.
The national heat wave continued with no rain in sight for the parched Midwest. Chicago logged a ninth straight 90 plus day as temperatures neared 97 with 95.9 in New York City and 97.3 in Pittsburgh. Philadelphia reported seven more heat related deaths, bringing the total to 43. High pressure blocked cooler air from the Pacific keeping the heat entrenched. Some showers may come by week’s end if the system weakens.
AP reports a mother Hattie Krizanich age 35 and her five children Janet Lee 10 Paul Jr 8 Larry Evin 5 Karl Edward 2 and Shirley Mae six weeks died in a house fire. Paul Krizanich 40 escaped and identified the victims.
About 200 homing pigeons died and 600 started a race to Chicago when a truck carrying them crashed into a tree on Highway 30 near Cedar Rapids. Driver Chester Radek of Chicago slept at the wheel. two 17 year old passengers were uninjured.
Harold Laverne Gilbert, 29, of Marion route 3, pled guilty to a drunk driving charge. He was arrested at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at First avenue and Eighteenth street SW after patrolmen Robert Fox and Wallace Johnson observed erratic driving and followed his car. He was fined $300 and costs.
DeLane and Elaine Shaheen filed suit for foreclosure on equipment stock and fixtures at the Roosevelt School grocery 1113 C avenue NW. They sold the property a year ago to Shady and Bahéa George for 5000 dollars and allege the full amount remains unpaid.
James Cleghorn 37 of Marion was arraigned on a burglary charge and given until Thursday to enter a plea in the Coca Cola bottling plant break case tied to George Dillon of Strawberry Point who has pled innocent. A foreclosure action by Willman Company against Clement E and Miriam A Fleury was dismissed on defense motion.
Sgt. Cones describes prison camp life with mud shacks and bunk beds after months of hardship. He recalls Aug 9 return orders, a long repatriation route via Kaesong Inchon and the Gen. W. F. Hase, a reunion with brother Albert in Japan, and a 15 day voyage home ending with a late night arrival in Town.
Cpl. Dale Reeder returned from two years and ten months as a prisoner of war in Korea and was welcomed by a caravan, Chamber of Commerce, and a courthouse lawn ceremony in Waukon. Judge George B. Richter delivered the welcome and Rev. A. H. Grossheim offered the prayer. A veterans hall dinner followed for Reeder and his family.
Capt John Payton Jr 31 of Burlington and Airman Gerald D Abrahamson 21 of Forest City are among 49 lowans freed so far. Langfitt and Payton were repatriated Sunday night Iowa time while Abrahamson returned Saturday night. Payton, ex husband of Barbara Payton, noted she was divorcing Franchot Tone and reportedly planned to marry Tom Neal.
Pfc. Donovan Waller of Creston, age 24, released from Communist captivity on Monday, arrived at Des Moines airport with his family awaiting. He plans to reenlist after his 30 day furlough, though he prefers not to rejoin infantry due to heavy walking. The exchange also yielded M Sgt Ray Langfitt, 36, and other Iowans over the weekend in Korea.
New York reports Sen. McCarthy said a woman civilian Army employee with access to classified defense data admitted carrying a Communist membership card. She worked as a minor clerk for three years and knew of shipments to Korea and Alaska, implying knowledge of troop movements. She attended a school teaching Communist leadership but denied party membership.
Ben Gold union president surrendered in Washington on charges of falsely swearing he was not a Communist and was jailed briefly over bail bond issues. He posted $19,000 in treasury bonds as bond, not accepted until union authorization was proven, then was released when a professional bondsman signed. No arraignment date set.

Kiwanis speaker Dr. Laurence G. Derthick visits Wednesday at the Roosevelt hotel. Harry Heiserman, formerly of Cedar Rapids, now in Burlington, is visiting on business. The Civic Development Association will host a noon luncheon at the Roosevelt hotel Tuesday. Cornell committeemen John Tisdale and Hal Ashmead are Freshman week committee members helping welcome new students starting Sept 8.
Omaha dispatch reports Northwestern Bell Telephone Company employees ratified a contract with the company and the Communication Workers of America by a 5 to 4 margin. James E. Smith, CWA negotiating committee chairman, announced the results across Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota Iowa and Minnesota.
Charles and George Finn, the Finn twins, obtained a California attachment on a Lockheed C-97 at Burbank to challenge the government seizure of a C-46. They claim the army grounded the war surplus plane at Nellis Air Force Base, hindering their livelihood. The case, referred to the Pentagon, allows three days for payment, answer, or bond.
Arlo Becker 16, of near Newhall, was injured when the car he drove rolled over three miles south of Norway around midnight Sunday. He was taken to Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids for leg and back injuries.
Francois Marchand, 50, a farmer in Redon France, resurfaced after a month missing. Police and relatives found him at his barn loft, where he said he hid to grow a beard in private.
Martin Hinderknecht 75 of 116 Eighteenth Street NW Cedar Rapids died at 4 25 am Sunday after a sudden illness in a Cedar Rapids hospital He was born December 30 1877 near Atkins and married Mathilda Fritz March 5 1903 at Atkins He farmed near Atkins until retiring in 1918 Surviving include his wife two sons Richard W and Harold W of Cedar Rapids a daughter Mrs Elsie Banks of Denver a brother William Rinderknecht and three sisters Mrs Fred Gunzenhauser Mrs Henry Gerhold and Mrs Adam Gerhold He was active in Trinity Lutheran Church and sang in the choir Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 pm Wednesday conducted by Pastor E H Widmann Burial in Cedar Memorial Cemetery Friends may call Turner Chapel until noon Tuesday and at the family home after 4 pm Tuesday until 11 am Wednesday The family requests gifts to the church Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers

Sealy a Cedar Rapids tool engineer at Cedar Rapids Engineering Company for 21 years died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 2 09 am Sunday after a sudden illness Born November 17 1906 in Fairbury Nebraska he was married to Dorothy Robinson on November 20 1930 in Cedar Rapids Surviving are his wife two sons James M and John Allan Sealy one daughter Mrs C F Leathe and his mother Mrs Minnie Sealy Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery A service will be held at Turner Chapel with Masonic and Elks participation and all Master Masons are asked to attend at the Crescent Lodge hall with burial in Linwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Mabel Henderson Andrews 80 a Cedar Rapids native long time resident who moved to California died Friday in La Jolla after a brief illness. Her husband the Rev. Mr. Andrews and sister Mrs. C J Fletcher of Whittier Calif will accompany the body to Cedar Rapids arriving Thursday morning at Miss Nelle Erwin 528 Vernon Drive SE graveside services set for 3 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery Turner Mortuary in charge
Clem C. Blue 29 year old Cedar Rapids resident died Saturday. Funeral services will be at Janeba funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday conducted by Rev. Floyd L. Hinshaw. Burial in Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. A brother Russell Blue of Milan Mo. was omitted from Sunday’s Gazette survivors.
Services for Mrs Archie F Hiller of 818 Seventh avenue SE, a former Cedar Rapids school teacher and 46 year resident, will be held at 1 30 p m Tuesday in the Beatty Bearle chapel conducted by Dr Kenneth E Metcalf of St Pauls Methodist. Burial follows at Oak Shade cemetery in Marion. Friends continued to be received.
A day-long inspection tour of city facilities by Chamber of Commerce representatives is set for Wednesday September 9. Mayor Milo Sedlacek said the Chamber board approved the project and a bus will depart at 9 a.m. City officials Chamber spokesmen Plan Commission members and department heads will discuss needs plans and past actions at various sites and the group will lunch at Ellis Park pavilion. The afternoon segment of the tour will conclude at p.m.
Mayor Milo Sedlacek announced steps to plan an official Korean veterans day for returning prisoners of war and Korean conflict veterans. Parks Commissioner Dick Jones urged contacting service groups to gain support as city officials consider a Cedar Rapids area observance.
