Faulty Forecasts Costly Crop Policy Errors
Washington upi The General Accounting Office blamed the agriculture department for faulty crop forecasting that led to 1.67 billion dollars in incorrect policy actions in a single year. The GAO noted widespread misses in wheat and corn acreage, yields, demand, carryover supplies, and prices, while the USDA admitted room for improvement. Don Paarlberg cautioned that forecasting is only one factor among many in policy decisions and urged better documentation for forecasts to enable evaluation.
