Eva May Rudd longtime Cedar Rapids resident died in Long Beach California where she moved in 1936 She was born May 1 in Fairfield Surviving daughters Laura Moore Mrs Walter Weldon and Mrs Robert Dean plus three sons Clarence E Rudd Walter Hershell and Michael Services in Long Beach at 10 a m Thursday Willard Johnstone 42 Tucson Arizona nephew of Mrs Mervin Shope died and services planned in Tucson Surviving wife Betty three sons Paul Jimmy and Charles and three daughters Mary Carol and Janet none of the other details.
Richard J. Kosina, 28, of Walker, pleaded guilty before U S District Judge Henry N. Graven to illegal operation of a still. Sentence postponed to Sept 1 for a pre sentence investigation. The still was found July 11 in a Walker basement where Kosina lived with his mother. Bond $500 remained in effect. Also Ernest F. Pence of the firm Jordan Jordan and Pence was admitted practice in U S court on motion of U S Attorney F E Van Alztine.
Bulldogging calf roping and drone busting are featured attractions at Cowtown Rodeo. The event starts at 120 p.m. Thursday on Channel 9, with a lively lineup expected.

In Milwaukee county Proxmire led by more than 53,000 with Kohler trailing by about 30,000 from three years earlier. Kohler’s defeat reflected GOP resistance to the conservative old guard. Proxmire runs a Waterloo printing firm while Kohler leads Vollrath Company of Sheboygan, amid Kohler family ties and a long UAW strike at Kohler Company plants.
Washington reports the White House says President Eisenhower is disappointed by the Wisconsin Democratic victory and notes the Republicans took a bad licking. Press Secretary James Hagerty says the remark includes Walter Kohler, and Meade Alcorn urges party unity for 1958 and 1960. Democratic head Paul Butler cites voter discontent.
William Proximire, 41, the first Democrat to win a Wisconsin US Senate seat in 25 years, rose from political amateur to victor after a long bid. Born in Illinois, educated at Yale and Harvard, he taught political theory at Harvard, runs Artcraft Printing in Waterloo, and directed his Madison campaign from home with wife Ellen described as an experienced Democrat in the state. Rain reduced attendance across Weatherday as forecasters predict ongoing showery weather in the state at least through Thursday. Highs Tuesday ranged from 57 in Mason City to 83 in Burlington, with Cedar Rapids at 67 and lows from 55 to 65. Cedar Rapids reported a 59 degree low. Nationally, the north central and Rocky Mountains expected rain, with scattered thundershowers in the Southwest and generally clear skies in the South and East.

Washington The Senate approved and sent to the White House bills totaling about 816 million dollars for postal workers and classified federal employees. A 546 dollar yearly raise was approved for 279 thousand postal workers, costing roughly 279 million annually, while a separate 11 percent across the board raise for nearly 967 thousand government workers was approved, costing about 537 million annually. Senate leaders noted the House already passed the rate hikes but committees had not acted on the postal bill, with calls to extend raises to all federal staff.
Syria says foreign office spokesman announced Khrushchev and Balzanin will visit Syria before year end. If true, this would revive the B K tours now termed the K B visits with Khrushchev as top Soviet leader. Bulganin’s future has fueled speculation since Khrushchev left him behind on the East Germany tour.

An Indonesian diplomat reports a seven century dagger dipped in poison has been returned after a theft at the Indonesian consul general’s New York residence. Ernest Raymond, 16, confessed to stealing the $3,000 weapon and washing off the poison, claiming it as bad luck.
Robbie Haddy of 2008 Bever avenue SE pled guilty to driving with a suspended license before Judge Charles Penningroth. He receives a partially suspended sentence, with release set for the morning of Sept 3 to attend the first day of school, conditional on good behavior.
Bud Broxey of Center Point Tuesday was appointed constable of Washington township by the Linn county board of supervisors. Broxey, who also serves as Center Point town marshal, replaces William Ross as constable. Ross had not filed a required bond, the supervisors said. He was appointed May 21. A $300 bond a Braxey's application.
County engineer reports grading on a project near Paris and Center Point, covering six-tenths of a mile and four-tenths of a mile respectively, with bids opening Sept. 11. Separate legal matters include Mary Barta’s will naming Edward J and Louis A as heirs, executor Joseph Horak named, and a district court account suit by Ehrke Motors against John Hamilton. Brebner divorce dismissed, Osborne granted separate maintenance.

Washington AP Harold Stassen the President's disarmament specialist will travel to Washington late this week to confer with Secretary of State Dulles and likely the President. London talks recess Friday through Monday night. White says Stassen returns mainly for his son's wedding.
In St Louis eight judges at intersections handed bouquets to courteous drivers on the first annual Courtesy Day hosted by the Allied Florists Association. They carried 100 bouquets but by late afternoon had given 70, as sun wilted the remaining awards.
Senate Tuesday night defeated a motion to sidetrack the civil rights bill by sending it to the senate judiciary committee. The vote was 66 to 18 in favor of blocking the move.
Los Angeles report says Teamsters President Dave Beck announced that his union is investigating contracts negotiated by seven New York paper locals alleged by Senate investigators to be dominated by hoodlums. The announcement underscores ongoing scrutiny of union dealings and political influence.
A 52 year old Fort Wayne man Francis Smith and his Fort Wayne wife Mary Jane Stytle abandoned seven children up to age 12 and an eight month old infant in a DeWitt motel with only $1.30 between them. Smith was arrested in Keokuk after Red Cross investigators flagged his phony army lieutenant story. He and Stytle were married in Kahoka Missouri and traveled by taxi to Keokuk. Authorities say Smith admitted abandoning the children and planned to return for them though he earlier told a bus station agent he would go to San Francisco. He supplied checks to cover the minister and cab fare.
In Buena Vista Colorado inmates rioted at the Colorado Reformatory with about 100 involved. Guards charged in quickly, one inmate killed and two gravely injured. Warden James Thomas cited hard labor and harvest as possible causes. Guard Robert Alinger and others were injured. Ecuador Gomez 23 of Denver killed the rioter who attacked Alinger. Governor McNichols ordered an investigation into the first major outbreak at the reformatory in 13 years.
A two car head on collision on U S 6 about one mile east of Leonard Johannsen in Durant died. Leonard Johannsen 59 was killed and Ivan Dierdorff 30 and Lily Gobel 36 of Wilton Junction were injured when Johannsen swerved to avoid Everett Rorick 70 who pulled onto the highway from a side road.
A three car crash on Highway 64 near Marion injured Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Trimble ages 50 and 44. Mrs. Trimble drove and turned onto a gravel road, colliding with a car that was hit from the rear by another vehicle. They were treated at St Luke’s hospital and released. An unidentified man suffered a head cut and refused hospital care.
