Cedar Rapids council approved a second and third reading to amend the traffic safety and safety education ordinance. The amendment removes the requirement that the officer in charge be the former schoolboy patrol leader. The meeting also dealt with permits, zoning petitions, road and sewer work, and a TV station event.
Opening of bids on salvage property along a reach of abandoned Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway right of way in the Coralville reservoir area Jefferson township Johnson county will be Sept. 17. The On Leave Society of Cedar Rapids will screen the 23 minute sound movie Crossroads at its weekly meeting. The showing occurs Thursday at 7 45 p.m. at the YWCA venue. The film portrays a social narrative tracing population changes from 1940 to present figures.
Des Moines reporting housing construction in Iowa's 17 largest cities fell nearly 10 percent in July. Total value dropped by $575,000 from July 1956 with 53 fewer units than July last year. Among 51 cities over 5,000 population, 1956 expenditures totaled 39 million dollars, up from 33.5 million in 1955. Decorah spent 164,354 dollars with a per capita cost of 27.12 dollars, below the regional average of 36.19.
University of Iowa scientist reports sex of unborn babies can be determined by the third week of gestation shortening recognition time by about a month. Using embryonic skin and nerve samples and chromatin differences, the work aims to uncover early sex changes to aid prevention of physical sex abnormalities.
Dr Witschi reports abnormalities in male fetuses may arise from maternal immune reaction. One proposed treatment is giving antibodies to the mother during pregnancy to block the sex development reaction, similar to RH incompatibility. No such antibody has yet been found.
