President Nixon approved a four power draft on the Berlin accord after talks with Kenneth Bush U S ambassador to West Germany. Bush said signing could occur within days and called it a major triumph for Nixon foreign policy and allied cooperation.

Ten passengers were evacuated safely from the 428-foot German freighter Trans- Michigan after it ran aground in the St. Clair river channel following a collision with the Brazilian ship Netuno. The freighter listed in 23 feet of water near the Canadian shore while most of its 31 crew remained aboard. The Netuno proceeded to Detroit. Coast guard boats aided, and one evacuated passenger with a heart condition was hospitalized as a precaution.

In Solonitsko near Novgorod a group of boys uncovered about 132 pounds of 17th century coins from Peter the Great’s era. They found dark coins, dug a jar full, and filled four buckets before officials confirmed the treasure dates to Peter the Great’s reign between 1682 and 1725.
Three more Cedar Rapids men joined the race for city finance commissioner bringing eight candidates total. Milton Polehna Wells and Harold Schaefer filed papers on Friday and Thursday, with others already in the field. To qualify, petition signatures of 400 voters are due by Oct. 5 ahead of the Oct. 19 primary and Nov. 2 election. Incumbent Stewart Shank said Aug. 17 he will not seek reelection.
Gov. Robert Ray ordered a state investigation after differences emerged between Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Robert Connair's finding that Roger Ingram died of a broken neck and a private autopsy suggesting possible electrocution. The investigation will review the midway area and assess whether negligence occurred.
The Atomic Energy Commission said it will not appeal the DC Circuit Court of Appeals denouncement of its environmental rules. It will issue revised regulations next week to meet court objections, making the AEC responsible for evaluating total environmental impact of nuclear plants and alternatives.
Clarence P. Walter 67 of 21 Twenty-fourth avenue SW died Thursday after a long illness. Born near Watkins on February 7 1904 he lived in the Watkins area until 1958 when he moved to Cedar Rapids. He belonged to St Ludmila church Knights of Columbus Don Spaight council and the Eagles. Surviving are his wife Ann Souchek two sons Clarence Jr and Ronald both of Cedar Rapids a sister Ethel Wessling and a brother Ralph Walter five grandchildren. Services Monday 9:30 at Janeba Kuba funeral home and 10 at St Ludmila church with burial in Watkins cemetery Rosary Sunday at 8 p.m. by St Ludmila parish and Knights of Columbus in the funeral home. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday.
Mayme Rose Chalupsky of route one Cedar Rapids aged 76 died Thursday. She was born February 9 1895 in Vining and married December 31 1912 at Tama. Survived by husband William F Chalupsky daughter Martha Novak Lisbon two sons Charles W and Edward G both Cedar Rapids two brothers Joseph Dvorak Tama and Charles Dvorak Fairfax seven grandchildren eight great grandchildren. Services at Turner Chapel West at 1:30 p m Saturday with Rev A T Washington of Sharon United Methodist church burial Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at Turner Chapel West.

No progress was made to ward a new contract between local 109 IBEW and Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co. at a Davenport meeting. No further talks scheduled. Company offered reinstatement of the previous contract which the union refused. Strike began Aug. 15. Main disputes are fringe benefits and contract language.
