Drowns in Wakpicada Park Fishing Pond
David A. Steel, 21, of 535 Knollwood Drive SE, drowned in a Wakpicada Park pond southeast of Central City around 4 30 p m Wednesday while attempting to swim from shore to a floating picnic table about 75 feet away. Deputies and Central City fire department recovered the body about an hour later. The pond is up to 30 feet deep in places. He was a Cedar Rapids resident for 12 years, born August 8, 1950 in Detroit, and a member of All Saints Catholic Church. Surviving are his parents four sisters and three brothers.

Fire officials linked the blaze to a pilot light igniting a gasoline can in a shed behind the Ameri cana Beauty Salon at 606 Sixth Street SE. Stephane and her 4 year old brother Tom were with a babysitter at 610 Sixth Street SE when the spill occurred while playing with Todd Dayton, 2, son of Mr and Mrs Ronald Bean, at 1625 B Street SW. Merritt Albee, 46, of Van Horne, was visiting his mother at 514 Sixth Street SE.
