North Korean forces launched a renewed assault along Korea's east coast advancing toward Pohang and threatening the Pusan port. U S and UN forces countered with air and naval support as battles near Kigye and the Pohang airfield continued.
Navy divers reached the submerged hulk after a fog lifted as the hospital ship Benevolence sank within 30 minutes after a collision with the freighter Mary Luckenbach. Survivors numbered 489 with 18 died. exact aboard count undetermined amid salvage efforts off the Golden Gate.
The House passed a $16 771 384 479 emergency defense bill by a 311 to 1 vote to fund rearmament for the United States and allies. Ivan Boston, 20, of 118 Sixteenth Street NE, suffered a possible skull fracture when his motorcycle collided with a car at Second Avenue and Twelfth Street SE at about 4 18 p m Saturday. He was taken by Ambulance Service to St Luke s hospital. The car driver was Harold Balstad of Pella.
New Rochelle resident Mrs. Sarah Appel files a suit in Superior Court to invalidate director John Stahl's will and share in his $400000 estate. She alleges Roxana Stahl coerced the filmmaker into a favorable will by threatening exposure of his prison history. Stahl, born Jacob Morris Strelitzsky in Baku, Russia, died January 12. his widow has received $4000 monthly from the estate.
An Irish Mail express train from Holyhead to London derailed near Conway Wales after colliding with a light engine. Several coaches were smashed and passengers trapped as officials feared many injuries though the total count was not yet known.
The Eighteenth district judgeship vacancy in Linn Jones and Cedar counties will be filled by a Republican nomination at the Tuesday convention held in the Linn county courthouse. Penningroth or Schluter are favored, with Penningroth publicly running and Schluter active. delegates include 49 from Linn, 13 from Jones, and 12 from Cedar.

Ransom Eli Olds, 86, last of the automotive pioneers and founder of the first U S auto manufacturing company, died after a long illness. He built Michigan's first gasoline car, produced the first U S export car, formed the first auto manufacturing firm, and created mass production in the industry. The Oldsmobile and the Reo brands bore his initials.
The United States government disclosed it is monitoring William Z. Foster, leader of the U.S. Communist Party, while pursuing 11 top convicted Communists as threats to national security. Foster, 69, free on bail for over two years due to illness, has not been tried for conspiracy but authorities emphasize ongoing action and vigilance.
Hollywood character actor Charles Grapewin, 79, was divorced Saturday from his wife, former Chicago socialite Mrs D W Becker. The couple wed in 1945.
