Reds Shift Assault to East Coast

The Korean Reds redirected attacks to the east coast near Pohang Kigye and Chongno as they pressed against South Korean Third and Capital divisions. U.S. air support aided South Korea while MacArthur said the Red spearhead near Jumhwa and Kigye faced stiff resistance. Intelligence indicated about 15,000 Reds massed for a possible push toward Pusan.

House Passes 35 Billion Spending Bill In Congress

The House approved a 35.554 billion dollar regular and military spending bill with a potential extra 16.712 billion for emergency defense and a possible 10 billion military request looming. If enacted the yearly budget would near 70 billion, surpassing normal by 25 to 30 billion.

Polio Victim Robert Meyer 6 Is Cedar Rapids Third Death

Cedar Rapids records a third polio death for the year as 6 year old Robert Meyer dies after diagnosis and rapid decline. He was taken to St Luke's Hospital then to University Hospital Iowa City, with an ambulance nurse assisting. An 18 month old is noted as another polio patient in the city bringing the yearly total to 77.

Two Die in Downtown Hotel Fire

A flash fire swept through a downtown hotel early Saturday, apparently started by a smoker. Two people died and 11 were injured, with three in critical condition. Some guests leaped from windows as the blaze raced along the two story building in minutes.

Women and children halt excavator in Detroit fight

About fifty housewives and children opposed a giant power shovel working on a laundry site in Detroit. After the crowd surrounded the machine and police failed to move it, operator Floyd Spruytte retreated. The place owner Allen Cooper, leasing from Faultless Laundry, had just lost an appeal to revoke the permit. The laundry company planned an injunction to stop construction.
