City approves temporary plaza lighting on May's Island

The city council approved an agreement with Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. to install a temporary lighting system on May's Island plaza. Safety Commissioner Frank Bush said the measure aims to eliminate dark areas by removing nine 300-watt installations and replacing them with four 10,000 lumen luminaires. Conduits for the plaza work continue.

Nine Truckers Fined In Weight Overload Court

In Cedar Rapids eight of nine truckers faced $10 fines for overweight loads as Judge Hullinger and the county attorney continued cases. Ernest Trachta objected to the weight tickets but paid the fine when his wife settled it. Lance Trachta was among those fined with additional costs. Fines ranged from $10 to $54.30 with one dismissal of an overwidth charge.

Cigarettes Taken in Grocery Store Breakin

Twelve cartons of cigarettes valued at 28.20 were stolen in a Tuesday night break in at Homsey Select Foods Market 3209 First Avenue SE. Entry was gained by cutting a screen door. The break in was reported to detectives Tuesday afternoon.

Shrine Picnic at Izaak Walton Park Draws Hundreds

El Kabir Shrine plans Sunday picnic expected to attract about 600 people including teenagers. Co-Chairmen Richard Brisbin and George Clifford say teen Shriner members are invited this year with entertainment starting at 3 p.m. at Izaak Walton park. Dinner at 5 p.m. Uniformed units will parade and perform with the clowns band Sheiks drum corps patrol and Chanters. This is the temple's second outing this year following a children and grandchildren picnic.

Elkader Dealer Fined Five Hundred Dollars

Irving Leonard doing business as Elkader Sales Barn was ordered to pay 500 by Cedar Rapids federal court after a stipulation. He was charged with failing to file an annual report under the Packers and Stockyards Act for 1902. The government sought daily forfeiture up to 3100, but settled at 500. He must comply with the act while in business or face contempt.

College School Lets Bus Garage Contract Awarded

The College School district awarded Zobac Construction Co. a $9,267.08 bid to add a bus garage and maintenance space for all schools. Open house and registration times were set, with the district noting the updated schedule for kinder and grades A through S.

VFW and Auxiliary Sponsor Cedar Rapids Poster Contest

Cedar Rapids Post No 788 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary sponsor a poster contest for children aged 14 and under attending Cedar Rapids schools. Posters must feature a war theme honoring the dead by aiding the living through poppies, include a seven word slogan, and be displayed during the Poppy Sale Days on Sept 18 19. Entries due Sept NM with posters submitted to business offices on Franklin Wilson Roosevelt and McKinley.
