Builder of Cedar Rapids landmarks remembers a tough route
Fred Paulson recalls humble beginnings from a military father who trained in cloth design to building Cedar Rapids. He links early poverty, an accidental rise in construction, marrying Florence Jones in 1909, founding O F Paulson Co in 1912, and constructing 400 homes and major buildings including the Memorial building, Roosevelt hotel, and Coe College structures. He remains active with his family in the firm and philanthropies.
