Monday headlines report high and low temperatures for multiple cities with precipitation amounts and a state forecast calling for heat, fair skies, and cooler changes later in the week. Public notices include several divorce petitions, decrees, traffic fines, birth and death notices, and wedding announcements across Cedar Rapids and nearby towns.
Waltonians host their annual ice cream and cake social on Friday at 7 p.m. on the lawn of A. J. Smith at 2335 Mt. Vernon Road SE. Proceeds benefit Camp Conservation near Troy Mills, aiding underprivileged Cedar Rapids children with free summer outings. Joe Carberry chairs the event with Milo Sedlacek and others assisting.
The Progressive magazine denounces Henry Wallace and his new Progressive party as perverting progressivism. It urges American Progressives to back Socialist Norman Thomas for president, labeling the Wallace claims of kinship with Teddy Roosevelt, La Follette, and Norris as fraudulent.
About 70 Linn county school board members attended an all day conference in Cedar Rapids on reorganizing Linn county schools. Cameron Ross of the Department of Public Instruction signaled possible state approval and swift action for county plans, with votes likely at next March elections. Dr. James Van Zwoll led the survey effort as a panel discussed county trends and reform challenges.
Three Linn county men received $100 checks from the Clay county Missouri stockmen for aiding in cattle rustler arrests last December. Deputy Sheriff Larry Condon credited cattle buyers Bill McDonald Bob Taylor and weighmaster Mearle Lauber for spotting the rustlers and assisting the case. Rustlers Arthur Cassiday and Virgil Gardner were sentenced to 25 and five years respectively at Fort Madison penitentiary. They face Missouri prosecutions after their terms end.
The Iowa Psychopathic Hospital and the Iowa Mental Hygiene Society will sponsor two exhibits at the state fair. One portrays teamwork in mental hygiene including the psychiatrist clinical psychologist and psychiatric social worker. The second shows electronic progress in brain disorder study with brain wave records and an automatic wave analyzer.
Six law college students, four from Iowa City, were admitted to practice in Iowa by the supreme court. They passed the bar exam weeks ago and have just completed their college work. Named are John R. Duree Thomas M. Howell Howard T. Lewis Blair E. Hunter J William Heffner and Joseph L. Pehlan. The next bar exam will be in Iowa City October 12 to 14 with no Des Moines fall session.
President Truman sailed from Lewes on the Newport Williamsburg after fog delayed his nine day inland and coastal cruise. The yacht lay at a harbor of refuge until 9 45 a m then departed toward Cape Charles Virginia.
Charles A Mills 86 retired Illinois Central engineer died Monday He served 40 years on the railroad and before that lived on a farm near Independence Iowa Central News.
In Linn County district court on Tuesday four accident damage cases were filed. Lyle H. Chermak of Cedar Rapids seeks 203.23 for damages from a March 29 1947 collision at 721 Fifth Avenue SW. J Jay Smith sues Lowell A Howe of Birmingham Alabama for 146.68 over a December 11 1947 collision at Second Avenue and First Street SE. Vivian M. Worden of Marion sues Kenneth McGee of Marion for 63.35 over a March 11 collision while parked on Ninth Avenue. Lucille Anderson sues William and Howard Rupperle of an March 11 incident on Third Avenue SE for 51.87.
Edwin McKibben sues Richard S. and J. F. Chapin for 10405.20 for injuries from an accident June 7 at B avenue and Sixteenth street NE. In a counterclaim the Chapins face Sullivan claims totaling 7391.75 for injuries to Mrs Sullivan and car damage.
Hobart McBride filed suit against Vernon and Eilean Clark seeking a court order to compel performance of a sales contract for 585 Seventh Avenue and $500 in damages. He alleges an offer of $500 on June 11 and a revised possession date from July 1 to August 1, which the defendants refused to honor.
Two wills were admitted to probate in district court Monday. Mrs. Harry F. Sundberg appointed executrix without bond and sole heir in her husband Harry F. Sundberg’s will, dated July 14, who led Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce traffic bureau. Lamb will names Charlotte Lamb Porter as sole heir and executrix without bond.
Linn county district court records show three new account suits filed. A fourth case targets Darrow Sales Company and Cleo and Glenn Darrow by Peerless Industries seeking 124 dollars. Eastman Kodak Stores sues J. W. Locke of Jack's Photoshop Marion for 538.25. Standard Brands sues John and Gertrude Walker of Walker grocery Prairieburg for 123.05.
In a Monday default judgment Judge Floyd Philbrick ordered Mr and Mrs Lyle E Herman to vacate the property at 1510 Ninth Street SW owned by Margaret E Pratt.
Judge G. K. Thompson on Tuesday granted Robert B. Ware a default judgment for $110.54 against Eugene Streets for damages.
New York report says Mrs. Oksana Kosenkina, 52, who leaped from a third floor window at the Russian center, was deemed too exhausted for a planned press interview. Lt. Pappa cited Dr. Ford confirming interview is not possible due to her condition.
Mahlon Baldwin 24, former Cedar Rapids resident, died when his car struck a North Western freight train at the East Fourteenth street crossing in Des Moines late Monday night. Two others, aunt Mrs. Robert Asher 36 and her son Worthington Lindsay 15, were injured and remain at Broadlawns General Hospital with the youth listed in critical condition. Witnesses said the car driven by the aunt pulled around a stopped city bus before impact. the 1933 Chevrolet coupe was demolished. Baldwin's father Vern Baldwin was notified in Cedar Rapids. services likely in Des Moines where he had spent years.
Cedar Rapids teachers and supervisors return to the classroom ahead of pupils with a week of meetings. A principals and supervisors gathering opens the schedule, followed by an orientation for over 40 new teachers and a teacher institute for about 400 staff members at the Board of Education auditorium. Speakers include Dr. Paul Misner of Glencoe NL and Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce president David Lehti.
Louis Budenz former Communist was called as a surprise witness in the House American Activities Committee spy investigation. He testified behind closed doors and committee sources said he provided information on relations between Whittaker Chambers and Alger Hiss.
Templeton a Carroll county town of 400 endures its worst water shortage in decades as pumps at two wells run briefly twice daily. Daily use averages 10 000 gallons but current supply limits residents to 2 000 gallons. A 73 000 gallon standpipe remains full as private wells and cisterns supplement scarce surface water. Lowland tilling has reduced local surface water recharge.

David A. Cunningham of Perry and Chicago announced the purchase of 320 acres known as an Iowa show place near Woodward from R. S. Kilpatrick of Des Moines for 105000 dollars. The farm has 26 buildings and four residences. Cunningham plans to raise beef for his Chicago restaurant and build an airplane landing strip and hangar to commute by air between Chicago and the farm.

A young Methodist minister, Rev. Ernest R. Bromley, 36, urged draft eligibles to refuse registration in a case drawing federal scrutiny. Cedar Rapids resident Edna Frances White Wade 1838 on Memorial Drive SE died at home after a long illness. She taught in Cedar Rapids public schools for 15 years before her 1922 marriage. Julia Buresh Novy 74 of North Liberty died 5 a.m. Tuesday after a lingering illness in a Davenport hospital. Born March 30, 1874, she was the widow of Joseph Novy. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Anton Ulch and Mrs. Lumir Cuhel, three sons Milo Emil Joseph, two brothers John and Frank, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Indianola AP W T Hamilton president of the Simpson college board of trustees announced Tuesday a $300,000 contract for a new women's dormitory at the college. The Wildes Construction Company of Waterloo is scheduled to start work on the unit next month.
Donald Buchtella, 19, of Marion, shot himself in the right forearm with a revolver Monday about 9:30 p.m. on a country road north of Marion. He was taken to St. Luke's hospital. Deputy Sheriff Harlan Snyder reported no reason for the act.
