A United Press survey shows average American housewives struggle to stretch budgets amid rising prices. Many cut luxuries, borrow from savings, return to work, or reduce meat and dairy as inflation and strikes bite across cities from Indianapolis to Los Angeles.
Cedar Rapids report claims Safety Commissioner Gordon Hughes asked Police Chief Tom Condon to resign. Both men deny it, stating no resignation was submitted or requested. The Policeman's Protective Association pushes seniority reforms while Mayor Hahn awaits the grievance committee's legal opinion before council talks.
Cedar Rapids and much of Iowa endure a blistering heat wave with 95 degrees at 2 30 pm. No relief seen as weather officials warn of possible new heat records and forecast 102 later in the week. Des Moines and Council Bluffs report highs near 99.
In Moscow Premier Stalin met Monday night with United States Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith British envoy Frank Roberts and French Ambassador Yves Chataigneau at the Kremlin. Foreign Minister Molotov also attended as Western powers sought to end tensions over Germany.
New York socialite Constance Murray age 19 plans novitiate at Convent of the Holy Child Sharon Hill Pennsylvania beginning September 15. Her last social appearance includes serving as bridesmaid for her sister in Southampton as part of a family event. Murray heir to a $50 million fortune from grandfather Thomas Edward Murray.
Police reported that an undetermined number of men were trapped in a Marysville gold mine cavern about 26 miles northwest of Helena.
In Cincinnati AP report says two girls and a boy aged 8 attempted to crack a safe in an automobile sales company office. Patrolman Thiele found them hammering the safe, having broken a window. The oldest child was 11. the group also included a 8 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. They were turned over to juvenile court.
New York AP Babe Ruth wills part of his estate for the interests of the kids of America. After widow’s income, 10 percent goes to The Babe Ruth Foundation Inc to support child welfare juvenile delinquency and high school sports prizes. Ruth’s daughters share remaining proceeds with other gifts to wife relatives and staff.
Deputy City Prosecutor Byron Gentry ruled that snoring is not willful or malicious and cannot be controlled by the snorer, granting immunity to a neighbor whose loud snoring disturbed the Wilson Carrs in their apartment. The decision states snoring may occur unconsciously without disturbance liability.
Cedar Rapids Gazette carrier children, 115 in number, enjoyed a three day Great Lakes cruise aboard the City of Grand Rapids. They sailed from Chicago to Michigan City Indiana, toured Washington Park, and traveled with parents and supervisors. The trip began with a train ride from Cedar Rapids and included a stuffing of souvenirs and a friendly crew aboard the ship.
Washington AP reports American military chiefs agreed that army navy and air force must seek aid from each other to boost effectiveness and economy. The Newport meeting aims to clarify and extend the Key West agreement while discussing strategic issues and advances in weapons and logistics.
Berlin AP reported Thomas P. Headen describing his capture after entering a British sector area to photograph signs. Soviet troops seized him, questioned him, and detained him in a Soviet jail where he faced basic conditions and limited contact before being released.
In Berlin and southern Germany the Russians released three United States military government officials seized in the blockaded area. The British released Franz Erdmann head of the Russian controlled Eastern Berlin police criminal division for abduction and authority charges remain.
New York AP Soviet vice consul Zot I Chepurnykh said he will return to Russia but will not accompany Consul General Jacob M. Lomakin who is to sail Saturday. Lomakin was ordered expelled. Chepurnykh gave no departure details or reasons.
Canterbury dean Dr Hewlett Johnson known as the Red Dean says he was refused a visa to enter the United States for lectures. He blames the embassy for disapproving the American-Soviet Friendship Society sponsoring his tour and an address at Madison Square Garden on Nov 3. The U.S. embassy declined to comment.
Patrolman Robert McGarvey began to issue a ticket for a cracked rear window on a motorist in Kansas City. The driver offered to clean the glass in two minutes in exchange for keeping the ticket. The man then used a crank to shatter the window and drove off.
Mrs. Thomas P. Headen wife of the Berlin official released Monday by the Russians is the former Maxine Humeston of Iowa City Iowa. Story on state page.
Two German policemen were released by Soviet forces after a prior kidnapping as tensions rose in Berlin. An American photographer was assaulted while a Russian officer attempted to seize his camera near Potsdamer Platz and Koethener Street, with Western police briefly impeded.
