A U S department report shows 1937 fiscal year imports of farm commodities reached an all time high while exports lagged, with two dollars imported per dollar exported. Drought blamed, but economists foresee bumper crops reversing the trade balance this year.
The Legislative retrenchment and reform committee voted seven to two to criticize Governor Kraschel for creating an executive assistant position and paying $4,500 a year. The move follows Kraschel naming a personal friend as executive assistant, bypassing the $3,000 cap for the governor's secretary, leaving him with both a secretary and an executive assistant.
Charles Zimmy a 43 year old legless swimmer from Chicago began a 143 mile non stop swim from Albany into New York City. He plans to sleep and eat in the water aided by a guided rowboat and supplies in a trailing yacht. He hopes to reach Manhattan by Saturday afternoon and may attempt Key West to Havana after. He carries 200 cigars and improvises meals with sugar cubes soaked in brandy as he battles tides and cold water.
Washington AP Chairman Jones of Texas said the House agriculture committee will push next session to cut payments to large operators to favor individual farming. The plan also seeks ending freight rate discrimination against farm products and exploring new uses and markets abroad and at home for farm commodities and products.

Cody Wyoming AP reports a massive forest fire in the Absaroka range killed 13 firefighters and injured more than 40 as crews began mop up operations after four days of fierce flames. The fire scorched about 2000 acres at 10000 feet, with CCC enrollees and forest workers among the victims. Coroners identified the dead using dental records due to severe charring.
Chicago AP report: Diane Lucas three months old, daughter of Herman and Mrs. Lucas, was seized from a stroller outside a grocery on the North Side. Police captain O’Connell said both parents were upset and could offer no motive. A citywide search followed. The infant has dark hair and eyes, wearing a white dress, pink booties, and related garments. Captain Patrick O’Connell announced the abduction and possible initial suspicion of the father before locating him.
A man driving south of Independence on Min On Road South was fired upon by two men at 1 30 pm Monday. The bullet pierced his windshield but he was not hurt. He was en route to Oelwein for Cedar Rapids electrical company work. He said he once helped his uncle arrest a bootlegger in an eastern Iowa county years ago when his uncle was sheriff. He warned he would "get" him. Linn county deputies searched the north part of Linn county but no suspicious cars were found.
Acting Secretary Wayne C. Taylor said the Treasury will refund $817,000,000 in maturing notes and seek no new cash. Short term bill borrowing will continue at $50,000,000 weekly for three more weeks.
