Linn-Mar voters face four candidates for four school board seats

In the Linn-Mar district voters on Sept 11 choose four directors from four incumbents A H Coles Arne Hedenstrom and Paul Kramme plus Wayne Engle to fill the remaining two years of a vacancy created by Sid Schwartz resignation Leon Gompert had been appointed but did not seek the post. Incumbent Frank O Connell seeks the treasurer post again. polling at Indian Creek elementary. Filing deadline was Tuesday midnight.

Gerald Fitzgarrald Dies in Central City at 18

Gerald L. Fitzgarrald, 18, lifelong Central City resident, died Tuesday at his home. Born November 14, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, he is survived by his parents Ben and his wife, a sister Linda, a brother Keith, and grandparents Floyd Williams of Marion and Helen Fitzgarrald of Cedar Rapids. Services Friday at 11 a.m. at United Church of Christ, Central City. burial at Mt. Clark Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch chapel. casket not opened after the service.

Voters Choose In Three State Primary Races

Oklahoma voters backed Ed Edmondson for the U S senate with over 50 percent, defeating 10 Democrats. Dewey Bartlett won the Republican nomination. Wyoming and Alaska saw incumbents renominated unopposed. Clarence Albert, Tom Steed, and John Jarman easily won to return to the House.

Local Young Man Dies After Hwy 49 Crash

Clarinda AP reports Steven Crum 19 of Bedford died Tuesday night in a hospital after a highway 49 crash north of Bedford. The accident occurred earlier the same evening, and Crum succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.

Cedar Rapids School Board Candidates File for Open Seats

Ten candidates entered races for five Cedar Rapids Community and College Community board positions with elections set for Sept. 11. In Cedar Rapids Community district incumbents Barbara Bjornson and Ben Trickey face terms. Trickey won’t seek re election. College Community terms of Elmer Grissel and Lloyd Williams expire. Grissel and Richard Harger seek Grissel’s seat while Robert Koutny and Leonard Stolba compete for Williams’ seat. Treasurers Peter Bailey and David Neuhaus file for reelection.

The chief medical examiner reports a single day with a record homicide toll. Thirteen men died across Brooklyn four, Bronx one, Manhattan four, and Queens four including a triple slaying of Brooklyn teenagers on a deserted beach. Handguns caused nine deaths, rifles two, stabbings two. six victims were Black.

Ralph K. Pearson aged 75 lifelong Whittier resident and retired farmer died Tuesday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Born December 31 1896 near Whittier he married Bertha L Emmons February 21 1921 in Lisbon. Surviving wife two sons Norman D Pearson of Oskaloosa and Dr James E Pearson of Ames five grandchildren two sisters and a brother. Teen charged after one car crash near Spillville

Ossian Arthur Hemesath, 17, faces a charge of failure to have vehicle under control after a Wednesday accident west of Spillville. He lost control on a curve, struck a farm drive, and was treated at Decorah hospital in good condition.

Steering wheel comes off injuring Fayette woman

Sandra Mc Farland, 19, of Fayette, was driving four miles south of West Union when the steering wheel detached from the car causing loss of control and a collision with a bridge. She sustained minor injuries.
