Taxable retail sales in Cedar Rapids for the quarter ending March 31 rose nine percent from a year earlier to 87 million. Linn County total sales reached 102 million, a nine percent increase, while Marion posted 8.3 million, slightly below the 1971 first quarter.
Larry E Benters 20 of 1219 Tenth Street NW remained in fairly good condition at St Luke's hospital after a skull fracture and head lacerations from a one car crash in the 3800 block of First Avenue East. Passengers Irving Longerbeam 19 and Robert Baker 18 of 120% Seventeenth Street SE were treated for lacerations and released. Investigating officers said the vehicle skidded 356 feet before hitting a utility pole as Benters attempted to avoid another vehicle. Benters was charged with reckless driving.
The Rev. John I. Thomas sixty six year old pastor of Bethel AME Church in Cedar Rapids from 1959 to 1971 died Sunday in Davenport. Ordained in 1945 he served churches in Maroon Taylorville Des Moines Davenport and Cedar Rapids. He led local ministerial and human relations groups in 1964 and was survived by his wife Blanche three daughters two sons eight grandchildren three sisters and two brothers. Services are set for Wednesday at Bethel AME Davenport with burial at Pine Hills Cemetery. Visitation begins Tuesday evening at Nicholson funeral home Davenport.
Ellen Vornholt Gray died August 11 in Forest City Florida after a career teaching Latin in Dundee Illinois. She had lived in Lisbon and Cedar Rapids before relocating to Florida. Survived by her husband Edward burial was in Florida.

As of Tuesday morning no one had filed for one of two College Community district board seats in the Sept 11 school election. Richard Harger and Elmer Grissel have filed for Grissel's seat. Lloyd Williams plans not to seek re election. Cedar Rapids district sees five candidates for two seats including incumbent Barbara Bjornson. Ben Trickey has not stated his intent. Other filing candidates include Edward Olson and additional names listed.

A father in Santa Cruz de Tenerife Spain killed his three children by throwing them from a precipice and then died by suicide after so doing. The incident was reported by United Press International.
A section of Ellis boulevard NW becomes a one way westbound lane from Ellis lane to Edgewood road NW for boat races at Ellis park. Eastbound traffic is detoured via 6 avenue NW. The one way runs from Wednesday 7 a.m. to Monday 7 a.m. for safety and smooth motorist flow. Spectators should enter parking off Edgewood road NW at the Ellis boulevard intersection.
Jesse J. Milledge, 26, of a southeast Cedar Rapids address, filed suit in Linn district court Tuesday seeking suspension of the remaining six months of his one year Linn county jail sentence for assault with intent to commit a felony. He has served six months, attends Kirkwood Community College, and is rehabilitating himself. the suit argues early release serves rehabilitation and welfare over continued punishment.
Edward L. Snell, 24, of 30020 Avenue NW, was arrested Monday on a warrant charging assault and battery. He posted a $110 bond and was arraigned. The information was signed by his wife Shirley, who alleged he beat her and threatened to kill her last Saturday, before Justice of the Peace Glenn Powers.
