Petain Orders New Steps to Curb Sabotage
In Vichy the Petain cabinet set harsh measures against communists and saboteurs with special military courts to mete out summary death sentences. The move aligns with German orders to treat arrested French as hostages for German actions and to suppress anti-occupation activity. Interior measures fire nine mayors and 31 town councils, citing insults and hostility to national restoration, while releasing jailed anti communist labor leaders to counter worker agitation.
