Coal Dealers Seek Consumers Aid In Coal Price Fight

Cedar Rapids and Marton coal dealers elected Wayne B Ives as chairman to rally local home buyers against proposed new price schedules by the bituminous coal division of the interior department. Plans call for private protests by letter and petitions to Congressmen. The schedules would raise the cost of low priced coals by 80 to 85 cents a ton and screenings used by large industries by 50 to 90 cents, hindering local factories and jeopardizing efforts to attract new industries.

The Cedar Rapids coal price would be 316 dollars a ton including freight. It would cost 325 dollars a ton in Chicago, 160 miles from the mines, while in Cedar Rapids 90 miles away the price would be 440 dollars a ton with freight. Harry F. Sundberg of the Chamber of Commerce backed a cooperative protest to deter the proposed rate increase. Leo P.
