Search finds wreck of WWII cruiser USS Indianapolis
Researchers led by Paul Allen announced the discovery of the World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis wreckage in the Pacific Ocean near the Philippine Sea at a depth of about 3.5 miles. The ship sank July 30, 1945 after a torpedo strike, with 800 crew members surviving the initial sinking and nearly 600 dying in the ensuing days. The find follows a mission to locate artifacts from the ship that carried components of the atomic bomb Little Boy to Tinian.
