Police dogs prove costly and varied in Iowa counties
Police dogs in Linn and Johnson counties range from Belgian Malinois to German shepherds. The cost to buy and train a dog plus the handler runs from 6000 to 10000 dollars, with Malinois favored for activity and longevity. Iowa City’s Gallo, a shepherd, has served six years and had one off duty bite incident in 2000.
