Army taps U.S. small firms for beret supply amid overseas contracts
The Army awarded 4.8 million beret contracts last year with Ban croft Cap Co in Arkansas limited to 1.2 million orders. Six other firms, three American but overseas plants, cut into domestic production drawing congressional protests. Beijing and Romania made berets under foreign contracts, failing specs, prompting possible destruction or resale of 618 000 units. The Army also seeks US proposals to supply 3.9 million berets worth 50 million over two years.
