Prices Down In Livestock Markets Monday Estimates

Chicago AP reports Monday estimates for livestock show 7,000 hogs 2,000 sheep and 22,000 cattle. Barrows and gilts closed 25 to 50 lower, sows 25 to 75 lower for the week. Slaughter steers sold steady to 25 lower with some off 50.

Cedar Rapids hog prices held steady with butchers 200-220 lb at 15.50 to 16.25 dollars and packers 300 lb and down at 14.85 to 15.35. Weight-based reductions apply for heavier hogs and packers, while eggs and wool shows market quotes including corn at 1.01 and soybeans at 1.96 dollars, oats at 61 cents.

Angus Win Linn Baby Beef Show Grand Champion

Grand champion baby beef at the Linn county 4-H show was a 960 pound Angus owned by Tom Sauer of Walker. The reserve carcass winner was another 960 pound Angus shown by Lyle Stallman of Fairfax with various other breed wins listed including Hereford Shorthorn and Angus entries from Marion Mt. Vernon Palo and Center Point. Showmanship honors went to Kay Barnts and David Pears on among others with open Hereford dominated by Minish Brothers of Dysart.

Nekvinda Dies at 64 in Amana. Veterans Hospital Honor

Joseph L Nekvinda 64 of Amana route 1 died Friday morning at Veterans hospital Iowa City after a long illness. A World War I veteran, he worked for Johnson county maintenance as a dynamiter.
