He was Kiwanis charter member with 22 years perfect attendance and served on Fire Protection Assn electrical committee. MOSCOW AP dispatch reports U S airman Francis Powers voiced distress over attacks on America during his espionage trial defense. His family lawyer Frank Rogers quoted Powers after he was sentenced saying he is an American and that the defense sought to shift blame.
U.S. authorities indicate a decision on further moves for Powers awaits more information from Moscow. They stress the President, the secretary of state and the state department have followed the trial closely and do not intend to drop their continued interest. High officials say they fully intend to push the case forward.
Gen Charles W Ryder retired veteran of both world wars and former West Point commandant died Wednesday in Vineyard Haven Massachusetts. He served as a key military educator and leader across a long career.
George B. Easker 138 Twenty-sixth street dr. SE Cedar Rapids died in hospital Thursday of cancer. Born August 31, 1891 he married Margaret D. Kloppenburg March 22, 1933. He led Peoples Bank offices in Newhall and Center Point after earlier roles at Farmers Savings Keystone and Iowa Livestock Exchange. Survived by wife and father Henry Easker, he belonged to First Lutheran church and multiple fraternal orders. Burial Monday at Oak Hill.
Emil P. Nissen aged 90 of 309 Ninth St NW Cedar Rapids died in a hospital at 8 25 p.m. Thursday He was born in Germany October 17 1869 and came to Cedar Rapids from Blairstown Surviving are his wife Matilda a daughter Mrs Norman Sundholm of Cedar Rapids two sisters in Germany and three grandchildren He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 by Rev E W Koberg Burial Blairstown Cemetery

Julia Mae Brace, 94, of Cedar Rapids, died in a nursing home Thursday night. Born August 27, 1865 in Sterling, Illinois. She is survived by her son Paul and two grandchildren. Private services will be held Saturday with Beatty Beurle's Funeral in charge.
Emma Kvach and Ara Jane Turner were both commemorated with chapel services. Kvach was held at Turner Chapel at 3 p.m. Saturday with burial at the Czech National cemetery. Ara Jane Turner services were conducted at Turner Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with burial at Baker cemetery.

He says he acted as a civilian pilot under a CIA contract earning 30000 a year and expresses deep remorse. Prosecution portrays the act as premeditated and a threat to world peace.
Cornelia Knudtson, 51, of Wadena, fell from a moving car and was hospitalized in Oelwein on Friday with injuries.

Lawrence R. Johnston age 33 of 525 Fifth Ave SE was fined 300 dollars and costs Friday on a liquor charge.
Johnston pled guilty before Judge Floyd Philbrick to making liquor available to a minor. He was accused of giving liquor to a 19-year-old Central City youth after Cedar Rapids officers stopped him for running a red light on Third avenue at First street SE.
Jessie Robinson of 1123 Tenth Street NW received a suspended six month jail term after pleading guilty before Judge Floyd Philbrick to one count of receiving goods by false pretenses. The charge stems from obtaining 328 dollars from bartender Robert Parrish of 1625 East SW. Robinson is to make restitution.
Richard A. Thompson age 19 from Swisher was arraigned Friday before Judge Floyd Philbrick on a concealed weapon charge and given until Monday to enter a plea. He was arrested Thursday night at the Royale ballroom in Fairfax after allegedly pointing a .38 caliber pistol at another Swisher youth.
Oral S. Johnson of Harmony Minnesota pled guilty to cashing a false 20.38 dollar check at Montgomery Ward's on December 24. Judge Floyd Philbrick imposed a suspended six month jail term.
