Multiple emergencies and investigations unfold in three states
In Kansas a state office building faced evacuation after an envelope containing a powdery white substance described as anthrax was found. Up to 25 people may have been exposed as the powder lingered on elevator controls. The material was sent to Washington for testing. In Virginia DNA tests confirmed one baby’s biological ties to the wrong family after a three year switch, while California awaits results for the other infant. In Oregon eight people have died with help from doctors under the states assisted death law since it began last fall.

Beta blockers save lives after heart attack study
A large study of 201,752 Medicare patients finds beta blockers cut death rates by about 40 percent over two years and should be standard after heart attacks regardless of other conditions such as diabetes or asthma. The drugs, cheap under $5 per month, have long treated chest pain and high blood pressure. The findings appear in the New England Journal of Medicine.
